Kate

Kate has no memory of what happened in the last few hours. She wakes up in her room, with a prominent pain in the right side of her head. It is dark in her room, and she stretches a bit to numb the pain in her limbs.

 “…Katie….”

She turns her head slowly to her right. A chubby girl with freckles is beside her. Her blonde hair is messy and she mumbles her name again.

“It’s ok Jenny, I’m here…sleep”, Kate mumbles to her sister.

Jenny continues to toss and turn and repeat her sister’s name over and over again. Kate decided it is best to call Mom.

She swings her legs to get out of her bed – her head suddenly starts to spin and she feels dizzy. Ignoring that feeling, she goes downstairs. Suddenly Kate halts.

…Is someone weeping in the kitchen?

She runs as fast as she can towards the kitchen. Her mother is sitting in the fetal position, her hands covering most of her tear-stained face while streaks of blonde locks falls on her face. Kate grabs her mother’s shoulders and shakes her.

“Mom? Mom?”

She continues sobbing.

“Mom…what happened?” Kate cries a bit louder this time. Her mother looked up to face her daughter – her eyes still closed – and said:

“Oh Kate! Why did you have to drink and drive?”
