The Last Walk
Saw he was no longer whole
His body adorned the gilded coffin
High above rose his soul.
The dead poor man looked around too
He didn't regret having to part
His wife had departed; children grown up
His work was complete, so now he took heart.
The two souls rose from their opposite lives
And found each other finally equal
They walked together the final road
This was their epilogue - there wouldn't be a sequel.
The rich man checked his pockets
They were as empty as his heart
The poor man was equally penniless
But being loving and loved - set him apart.
The rich man stepped into the afterlife
Property in excess yet he still wasn't whole
All that he carried on the journey forward
Was a hollow, empty, soul.
The poor man didn't fear of loss
He'd never had much to lose
He walked on thinking of the ones he loved
He wasn't alone on his life's last cruise.
The two men had lived two different lives
Their pasts were past with an uncertain future
But today the rich man was hopelessly poor
And the poor one significantly richer.
