Whim
(Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s song, ‘প্রাণ চায় চক্ষু না চায়’)
The heart wants,
But your eyes speak denial –
Say, what is this foolish
naughty whim of yours?
Fair shapes come and turn away
For this strange phantasy,
So, why have you
adorned with amorous beauty?
The heart wants,
But the denial of your eyes,
Wonders one – why has thou
put so much beauty upon thyself?
Shadows white as snow,
Flicker all around you,
But they – in dismay
also return – why such charming devilry then?
Your lips – conceal some words
Thy heart hides the silent – yet growing – flame of passion
Your mask has a cruel smile up your chin,
But thy loving cry – thin for thy ears.
Thy lips – red with emotions,
The heart redder than wine,
The playing smile burlesquing up your face
What secret does – thou conceal?
Garlands shatter your nape – misery!
Feels like a narrow-minded thorn bed!
Spiking dreams, prickling ambitions
Thy deadly than Christ’s crown!
In spite of all this,
In the reunion of the Venusian seas,
The unbreakable bonds which are made,
Will never be broken – save for the marrow of perpetual separation!
The heart still wants,
Thy eyes speak obstinate – yet loving – denial
Say, why you are still,
Adorned with thy beauty?
