Springlied
(Based on ‘Scherzo’ from ‘Piano Quintet Op.44’ by Robert Schumann)
The flowers start blooming…
It’s Spring!
The air starts to get chromatic,
It’s Spring!
Butterflies flutter in the breeze
It’s Spring!
The meadows grow lush and green
Glorious Spring!
Colours fill the atmosphere,
Colours of Spring!
Sweet, mellow afternoons…
For only Spring!
The bees start buzzing
O, sweet Spring!
The orchards fill up with fruits,
Glorious Spring!
The sunshine dazzles on the soft grass…
It’s Spring!
Makes us forget bad things…
It’s Spring!
Instil in us happy memories…
It’s Spring!
Whether darkness covers us
All of a sudden…yet
There will be light
Glowing with sublime…
And whether we have too much sorrow
And too much cold…
It will thaw and vanish, for
It’s Spring!
The breeze flutters by…
O marvellous Spring!
The sky turns a bright blue…
O rejoiceful Spring!
Thou soul opens up even more…
In the dawn and the twilight!
The melodies played by the colours,
Makes one wonder of his past days…
When, they were in the youth of their age,
They would feel joy, and dance –
Dance in the refreshening air…
Now, dark and desolate emotions are
Colder than harsh winter himself
Darker than the darkest night,
You sit over there…
But have you allowed lady Sunshine…
To light away your wearies?
But soft! What light comes in now?
None other than herself – Spring!
The sunlight plays its cadences…
It’s Spring!
Flirts with the chill air,
It’s Spring!
It’s that time of the year…
It’s Spring!
Forget all your bad memories…
Here’s Spring!
Make new memories with
One and only – Spring!
Chromatic kaleidoscopes flutter in air,
It’s Spring!
You cannot feel sad and depressed,
For it’s Spring!
And while difficulties lie ahead…
While life never might be same…
So, enjoy this brief period of
Glorious Spring!
Venusian nature adorns herself –
For Martian Spring!
The trees fill up with green leaves
It’s Spring!
O come out lil’ children, dance
With beautiful Spring!
Winds blow by, the trees dance
In the cadenza of the spring air
The leaves toss about, like the daffodils
Of the Wordsworthian poem.
The wild waltz, oh
It’s the wild waltz of Spring!
The cadenza – sweetly emitted
By the twittery birds of Spring!
And yet, if one feels, deep down
His heart is dark and cold.
Open it up, man. Show
how you too can embrace the springly vibes!
Butterflies wildly chase about,
Bees follow in pursuit…
Flowers remain in constant fear –
What if their nectar gets stolen?
But yet they enjoy,
Twisting in the cool breeze
Mellow sunshine darting in
Such daring beauty – O Spring!
This concerto – of so many colours
So many insects, so much light
All staged by the
Only feminine of seasons – dear Spring!
Heart contented, spirits lifted
by Spring!
I lift myself high up –
Up in the hands of Spring!
And dance with my mind
Heart lost in the woman!
Come, feel no more disappointment
After all, its Spring!
Feel merry and happy, lad
For – its Lady Spring!
And while life takes unexpected turns…
Lovers may not reunite again,
So please, o please enjoy
This brief season – before scorching heat takes it
all!
Refreshed, enchanted
by Spring!
Sweetly singing lullabies
Jesus, its Spring!
O my, o my
Thou amorous Spring!
And thus I end, end
My lieder on Spring!
But is there really an end
To this beauty, this enchanted thing?
Perhaps no,
Perhaps they might know,
The blooming flowers, the chromatic air,
The blessed sunshine, the wild butterflies,
The buzzing bees…
Perhaps they know that
Venus too, can exist on Earth…
In the form of – why, it’s
SPRING!
